If you have a small bedroom, you know the struggle. There’s not much space to work with, and your room feels cluttered and unorganized. Fortunately, there are a few tricks you can use to decorate your small bedroom and make it look and feel better. Here are some of the best tips I’ve found to help you maximize space in your small bedroom.
Tips for maximizing space
You should keep the following things in mind when you’re decorating a small bedroom:
Keep the closet as your main area of focus. Most small bedroom closets are the smallest space, therefore, most space will be wasted in there.
The table needs to be either small and still functional, or else completely disappear. You don’t need to get a new table for your small bedroom – try a little table, or just cover your desk with a sheet. You may also consider just using a nightstand. Try going small.
Hanging curtains
If you want to bring the outdoors in, you can hang curtains to break up space and add a splash of colour. Use a magazine rack to store trinkets and extra clothes. Sometimes, we’re so busy flipping through magazines that we don’t have time to put them away. If you’re like me and always forget about the dozens of magazines at home, then buy a magazine rack. I use a wire rack with a hook to hold up all of my magazines.
Use a nightstand drawer for extra storage Another simple way to organize your space is to add a nightstand drawer to the bottom of your nightstand. Install a light fixture Before you get started decorating, make sure you have the perfect light for your room.
Some creative storage tips
- Your closet is full of clothes, and you haven’t worn them in months. Well, why not hang them up in a way that makes them look full? A simple mirror can create an entire display for your clothes.
- No one needs to see how messy your room is! Use a simple bulletin board or corkboard to display your photos.
- You hate how messy the shoes by your door looks. Well, why not hide off your trainers by covering them up with a blanket?
- You can keep all of your gifts and odds and sods in a basket. That way, you’ll know what you’re looking for when you need it.
Get creative with storage
It’s tempting to hang onto everything just because you like the item, but this often results in a cluttered and unorganized space. By giving away or moving clutter to a small closet or a storage area, you can open up more room for furniture and decor. Now, to be clear, I’m not advocating moving every piece of furniture you own out of your room — unless the rest of the house is a massive open space or you want to clear a lot of room for more storage. For a small bedroom, just getting rid of a few pieces of furniture that you don’t use and storing them in a closet or storage room will make a huge difference.
Create a cosy reading corner
While you want a big bed, a small bedroom can be a really nice, cosy space to enjoy reading in the evenings. Add an over-the-bed nightstand to light up your favourite place. You could also add a little reading light above the bed for more light. Buy a nice chair or ottoman and set it on a tray table for added storage. Pair this with a nice ottoman or overstuffed chair and spend some quality time curled up reading or watching TV. If you need extra seating, you can turn a dresser drawer into a sitting area. Hide clutter by removing small items from a big open space and stash small things in drawers and cupboards that you rarely use. Ask yourself, “What things can I place in drawers where they will stay safe and away from sight, but still easily accessible?
Conclusion
When your bedroom is small, you worry about spending a lot of time in there, so a little extra creativity can make it feel like a bigger room. So go ahead and throw some cute stuff on the walls and arrange the furniture. You can always adjust it later. Remember to keep the rest of your house feeling the same as you normally do.
